BCG
Announces First Executive Director
Drew Katz has been named the first Executive Director
of Boston Contemporary Group.
“Drew was our first choice. We’re looking forward to his leadership
as we unveil our first few events and work to promote the critical programming
that is happening in Boston,” said, Russell LaMontagne, co-founder,
Boston Contemporary Group.
Katz said, “I want to help make the BCG the most prominent art
organization in New England and help rejuvenate the Boston art
scene with relevant contemporary art exhibitions, events and
programming."
About Drew Katz
Less than a year after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design,
Andrew Katz opened "Gallery Katz," a white box dedicated to
showcasing works by emerging and mid-career artists. Best known for featuring
formal works, Katz often exhibited artwork inspired by architecture and
design. It was Katz that brought artist Shepard Fairey to Boston in 2004,
and long-served as Boston's strongest link to the work coming out of RISD.
The gallery also presented a highly anticipated annual contemporary furniture
exhibition which featured one-of-a-kind functional items. Since opening
the gallery, Andrew has made great attempts to educate and inform
artists and collectors about the inner-workings of an art gallery, speaking
often at institutions and leading public workshops and lectures. After
closing the gallery in 2006, he has been dealing artwork privately
in addition to consulting at several art-related businesses throughout
Boston, quickly building a reputation as an operations specialist and
creative handy-man. He has most recently served as the Acquisitions Co-Chair
for the Biannual AIDS Action Committee's "ARTcetera Auction"
in Boston, which despite a struggling economy, has gathered the most artwork
in auction history.
